Ilene Chaiken, 46, from Elkins Park, PA, is the creator and executive
producer of Showtime's new lesbian drama The L Word. Chaiken first pitched
her idea for The L Word to Showtime in 2000 and didn't
even receive a response. The premise of the series - about the lives of
lesbian women in L.A. - though mainstream and real-life to Chaiken, probably
seemed audacious and risky even for a cable network like Showtime. "As a
writer, I thought it would be nice to tell my own stories.," Chaiken said in
an interview with
Gail Shister. "I'm writing about people I know and the world I know."
