Janina Gavankar (Papi) hosts Welcome to Rukus Avenue.
Date: Thursday, August 13, 2009 Time: 7:30pm - 10:30pm Location: Barnsdall Gallery Theater, 4798 Barnsdall Avenue, Los Angeles, CA
Since 1996, Rukus Avenue has been at the forefront of a burgeoning music scene, mostly comprised of South Asian artists in N. America. From very humble beginnings, the label has expanded it's signature sound and cultural influence, as documented in both film & academic circles.
Welcome to Rukus Avenue, is a glimpse into the future of the label's next generation of artists.
On this evening, the entire Rukus Avenue roster - including: Rasika Mathur, CJ, Gingger Shankar, Sammy Chand, Hoodini & Sandeep, will perform together for the first time in an intimate theater setting.
Hosted by Janina Gavankar (The L Word), the audience will be treated to a diverse sonic array - including a re-imagined Bollywood sound, soulful R&B selections, a conscious Hip-Hop manifesto, musical comedy pieces and prominent elements from the rich musical legacy of the Sub-Continent.
Fusion dance pieces choreographed by Janet Roston and Yogen Bhagat (Bollywood Step), live musicians - including a string quartet led by Andrea Hammond and an artistic series of visualizations will round out the evening's creative offering
The event will be recorded live for an upcoming documentary.
Tickets are priced $25-35 and will be available online fromwww.bgttix.com.
Attendees will also receive priority entry to a post-performance party to be held inside the Foundation Room inside the House of Blues - Sunset Strip. Garth Trinidad (KCRW) is the confirmed headliner, along with DJ Ben G and Tasneem.

Love is getting cozy with women of Sapphic intentions this week when the
cast of Showtime's The L Word makes an appearance at One Night
Stand, a benefit for the Mazzoni Center.
"It's about raising
money and awareness that Mazzoni Center has services for bi and lesbian
women as well as gay men and transgender individuals," says Dave Rumsey,
the center's communications director. After series regular Jennifer Beals (yes, that Jennifer Beals from Flashdance) toured Mazzoni
during a visit to Philly this summer while stumping for Obama, she met
with executive director Nurit Shein to speak about LGBTQ issues, such as
health disparities within the community. The rest is herstory.
The main event — which
is unfortunately (for you, anyway) sold out — will feature DJs Jivey
Rivas and Just Jess, and the tea room at the Park Hyatt will be
transformed into The Planet nightclub from The L Word. Everyone,
however, is welcome to hit up the after-party at Sisters Nightclub.

Uh Huh Her is the dynamic pairing of musician/actress Leisha Hailey (Murmers,
The L Word) and singer/producer/instrumentalist Camila Grey (Mellowdrone).
Uh Huh Her’s sound, a self-described indie-electro-pop hybrid, “… is the
evolution from our backgrounds,” Grey says. “We slammed them all together
and that’s what came out.” Their music’s sultriness is replete with elastic
bass lines, ambient synths and backbeats that will seduce to the core. The
band’s first single, “Say So,” put them in iTunes’ Top 20 and resulted in
sold out shows in L.A., New York and the U.K.

My Address: A Look at Gay Youth Homelessness
"It's a documentary series about an issue I think is extremely important yet
gravely overlooked - gay youth homelessness. I know this sounds like some
pretty serious fare...in fact, it's a subject I never expected to be so
touched by. But after visiting a gay youth homeless shelter in Los Angeles
last year, I knew it was a topic I couldn't turn my back on." --
Katherine Moennig, narrator of My Address
